Sony Pictures has locked in a release date for the creature horror Skeletons featuring Brie Larson. The studio moved to acquire the project earlier this year during a bidding war at the European Film Market. Now, the film is officially headed to cinemas, promising a new and disturbing twist on the monster genre.
JT Mollner’s Skeletons gets a summer 2027 release date
The studio reportedly announced that Skeletons will release on June 4, 2027. The date places Skeletons in a competitive summer corridor, where it will open alongside a Lionsgate prequel titled John Rambo and an untitled Paramount event film (via Deadline).
The project reunites director JT Mollner with stars Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, who both led his critically acclaimed indie thriller Strange Darling. The cast for this new venture is significantly broader, featuring Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Daithí Ó Haragáin, Ione Skye, John Goodman, and Keith Carradine.
The story, told from a young boy’s point of view, centres on a chilling domestic secret. He slowly discovers that his parents are hiding a disturbing truth about his mother’s true nature. The script is a modern take on creature horror, with a first draft written by Brian Duffield and revisions from Mollner. It is based on author Philip Fracassi’s short story Fail-Safe. Previous reporting indicated that the narrative involves a mother who is secured in a cage every night.
J.J. Abrams serves as a producer on the project under his Bad Robot banner, alongside Drew Simon, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller. Executive producers include Duffield, Larson, and original author Fracassi.
Production began last month, a milestone Fracassi celebrated on social media. He detailed the story’s difficult path, noting that he initially could not find a publisher for the work. Universal Pictures later optioned it in 2022, but the rights lapsed two years later, allowing Sony to win the subsequent bidding war. “I’m so excited to see this story on the big screen, and can’t wait to visit set next month to take it all in,” Fracassi posted. “What an amazing journey.”
