John Lithgow’s transformation into Albus Dumbledore has set the internet buzzing after the actor was spotted on the set of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

In newly surfaced photos shared on social media, the 79-year-old actor was seen standing on a beach in England, wearing Dumbledore’s signature robe. Lithgow sported a flowing white beard that reached his waist, long wizard robes, and a pair of small, round glasses on his nose. This marks the first public glimpse of Lithgow in costume since production began in July.

However, the pictures have prompted mixed reactions among fans online. Many people praised Lithgow’s casting and look, calling him “great.” One user wrote on X, “He looks good but tbh I don’t have any concerns regarding Dumbledore anyway. John Lithgow is a fine actor and will do justice to the character for sure.”

Another commented, “I love him! His outfit has a Hogwarts Legacy vibe. Maybe a bit too long beard but that’s a detail. (Why is he at the beach though??).” A third user also stated, “LOVE IT JOHN LITHGOW IS SUCH AN EXCELLENT ACTOR RIGHT UP THERE WITH RICHARD HARRIS AND MICHAEL GAMBON. CANT WAIT.”

However, not everyone was happy. Some fans expressed mixed opinions about his look, with many calling the beard “fake” and “cheap.” One user commented, “The beard looks fake as Hell in the picture on the left. Here’s hoping they can fix that in post.” Another added, “Not impressed. Only a fan of the original.” A third comment read, “The costume is absolutely shit. Sheesh.”

The show is expected to come out in 2027.
