Matthew Lillard’s upcoming appearance in Daredevil: Born Again marks his entry into the superhero genre after years of success in horror and comedy. The actor, known for Scream and Scooby-Doo, revealed new details about his Marvel role during a Los Angeles Comic-Con panel. He also expressed a desire to reunite with James Gunn in the DCU.
Matthew Lillard is ‘available’ for joining James Gunn’s DCU
Matthew Lillard confirmed that he will appear in the next season of Daredevil: Born Again and expressed interest in joining James Gunn’s DCU. Speaking at Los Angeles Comic-Con, the actor said, “If you run into James Gunn, tell him I’m available… I keep waiting for that invitation. I don’t know if it’s lost in the mail.” The comment referenced his past collaboration with Gunn, who wrote Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, in which Lillard played Shaggy.
During the panel, Lillard revealed small details about his Marvel role, saying, “I do not wear any Lycra,” and added that while he is not playing a superhero, he enjoys the “really high stakes” of the superhero world. He praised his co-stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio as “incredible actors” and said he was “very proud to be part of the world.”
Lillard joins the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, part of Marvel’s revival of the Netflix series. It marks his first appearance in a major superhero franchise. The show, led by Cox and D’Onofrio, continues the story of vigilante attorney Matt Murdock and crime lord Wilson Fisk.
James Gunn, now co-CEO of DC Studios, is expanding his rebooted DC Universe. The slate includes Superman, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker Season 2. Gunn and Lillard once pitched an idea to Warner Bros. for Lillard to play Plastic Man, a role fans still want to see in the DCU.
DC Studios has not confirmed any casting talks with Lillard.
