Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has confirmed who will be helming Marvel Studios‘ upcoming X-Men reboot.
Who is directing Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot?
Coogler is well-versed in what is happening behind the scenes at Marvel Studios, having helmed two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies — Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) — and served as an executive producer on two Disney+ series — Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda (both 2025).
Given his success with Black Panther, some fans have been campaigning for Coogler to direct the upcoming X-Men reboot, which was teased back in 2019 by Marvel. However, while recently promoting Ironheart, Coogler has shared who will actually be sitting in the director’s chair for the first MCU-set X-Men movie.
A video of Coogler being asked to comment on fans wanting him to direct X-Men was recently uploaded on X. The filmmaker quickly shuts it down, saying, “No, no, Jake is directing that.” When asked to clarify if he meant Jake Schreier, Coogler remarked, “Yeah.”
Check out the exchange below:
Schreier’s involvement in X-Men was first reported back in May, with Deadline stating that he was Marvel’s “top choice” for the gig. While he was only in talks to direct the reboot last month, Variety‘s report last week on Marvel adding a fourth movie to its 2028 release schedule mentioned Schreier helming X-Men as more of a fact than a possibility. Now, Coogler has confirmed that Schreier, who helmed Thunderbolts*, will indeed direct X-Men for Marvel Studios.
The live-action X-Men reboot is not expected to be released until after the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga. The successor to The Infinity Saga has so far brought back multiple legacy actors from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise for scene-stealing roles in several blockbuster movies, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels.
The majority of these actors will also appear in Avengers: Doomsday. However, they are not portraying the main MCU versions of their respective characters, with younger actors expected to be cast in those roles following Avengers: Secret Wars. Jack Champion is one of the names being rumored for the X-Men reboot, with the actor admitting recently that he would “definitely love” to play Cyclops.
At the time of writing, Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot remains without a release date.
