A new casting rumor has revealed whether Keanu Reeves’ Neo will return in Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Matrix 5. Known for his role as the prophesied One who disrupted the machines’ simulated reality, Reeves could reprise the character under director Drew Goddard’s new vision. If confirmed, his return would mark a significant continuation of the franchise’s core mythology and its evolving digital rebellion.
Keanu Reeves rumored to return in The Matrix 5’s cast
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, “The idea is to have Keanu Reeves back for the next Matrix movie.” No official casting has been confirmed, and no additional plot details have been disclosed.
The upcoming installment will be directed and written by Drew Goddard (The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods). It marks the first Matrix film not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. Warner Bros. officially announced the project in April 2024, confirming Goddard’s involvement but not revealing any returning cast members.
Jesse Ehrman, President of Production and Development at Warner Bros. Pictures, had then stated, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
Goddard said, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.” (via Deadline)
The Matrix franchise, launched in 1999, follows Neo’s journey through a simulated reality created by sentient machines. The fourth film, The Matrix Resurrections (2021), ended with Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity reshaping the Matrix together. Although Reeves is expected to come back, the new movie has not yet confirmed if Carrie-Anne Moss or other past cast members will return.
Warner Bros. has not set a release date or shared further casting details.
