Arnold Schwarzenegger reflected on The Running Man during a recent interview with Grae Drake for CBR Presents: DRAW!, while promoting FUBAR Season 2.

Commenting on the 1987 film, Schwarzenegger stated, “It was great, but it could have been better.” He pointed to limited resources during production and said, “I think it would have been great if we would have been better prepared for this movie, if we would have had more money… the visual effects, the technology of visual effects, that they have today, all of those things I wished after the movie came out.”

He acknowledged his interest in Edgar Wright’s upcoming adaptation and expressed optimism about improvements. “I love the idea that they’re doing a sequel to Running Man, or a remake,” he said. “I don’t know what it’s going to be…I think that they have a good chance now with the new Running Man to make it better. And I hope, for their sake and for my sake, I hope that they will be successful.”

Director Paul Michael Glaser helmed the original film, with a screenplay by Steven E. de Souza. Based on Stephen King’s novel written under the Richard Bachman pseudonym, the story follows Ben Richards, a man forced to compete in a televised death game. The film features Schwarzenegger alongside Maria Conchita Alonso, Jesse Ventura, Yaphet Kotto, and Richard Dawson.

Edgar Wright directs the new version and co-wrote it with Michael Bacall. Glen Powell plays Ben Richards, with Katy O’Brian, Michael Cera, Lee Pace, Josh Brolin, William H. Macy, and Colman Domingo rounding out the cast.

The Running Man remake will release on November 7, 2025. Netflix premiered FUBAR Season 2 on June 12, 2025.
