Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teased new spin-off possibilities for its universe during a recent red carpet appearance. At the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, the creator hinted at exploring events that take place outside the main storyline, specifically between Seasons 1 and 2. His remarks surfaced just as anticipation builds for the upcoming Squid Game Season 3.
Hwang Dong-hyuk on when his potential Squid Game spin-off would be set
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that if a Squid Game spin-off were to be made, it would be set during the three-year period between Season 1 and Season 2.
Speaking on the red carpet at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards on June 2, Hwang told IndieWire, “If I make [a] spin off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three years gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times.”
Hwang also confirmed that he developed ideas for Seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously after the success of the first season. “After I finished the whole season, the first season … I tried to come up with the idea of Season 2 and 3 at the same time.”
The comments came shortly after Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 3, which premieres June 27, 2025. Season 2 debuted in December 2024 and became the platform’s largest-ever launch week, with 68 million views. Season 1 remains Netflix’s most-watched series with 2.2 billion viewing hours during its first 90 days in 2021.
Lee Jung-jae, who stars in the series, said fans should expect significant character developments. “There’s so much meaning and themes that are explored through each of the characters,” he said to IndieWire. “Definitely the same for my own character as well. So, you have to check it out.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter via a translator, Jung-jae admitted feeling anxious ahead of Season 3’s premiere. “We are going to be releasing quite soon, I am very nervous. I know that a lot of you out there are curious about what’s going to happen in Season 3, but all of us are more curious about how much you’re going to enjoy it. So, I can’t wait.”
