Armor Wars: War Machine MCU Movie No Longer on the ‘Front Burner’

Armor Wars is seemingly no longer in active development, according to a new update from outgoing Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore.

Moore — who is exiting Marvel Studios to work on non-Marvel projects, although he’ll still be involved with Black Panther 3 — recently offered an update on the War Machine solo movie while speaking with Collider to promote Captain America: Brave New World.

“You know, that’s not my project, to be honest,” he admitted. “But, I do know, as Marvel [Studios] continues to go through this phase, we want to make sure whatever we’re making is awesome. So that means we had to slow down some things that were on the front burner.”

However, fans need not worry much, as Moore told Collider that Armor Wars being put on hold doesn’t mind that the movie is canceled. “It doesn’t mean we’ll never make it, but it does mean we just have to be a little bit more considered so that every time out, audiences are guaranteed quality,” he explained.

Armor Wars was originally announced as a Disney+ series

Although announced in December 2020 as a Disney+ series, Armor Wars was reworked into a feature-length movie by September 2022. While the project was originally set to adapt the comic book storyline of the same name from the ’80s that saw Tony Stark dealing with his Iron Man armor falling into the wrong hands, scooper Daniel Richtman recently reported that Armor Wars was being heavily reworked after fans responded negatively to Rhodes’ depiction in Secret Invasion. He explained, “[At] this point, it’s looking like it’ll only happen post-Secret Wars. It’s also expected to focus on entirely different things than originally planned.”

Secret Invasion revealed that Don Cheadle‘s James Rhodes/War Machine had been replaced by a Skrull at some point prior to the events of the Disney+ limited series, with several clues pointing to the swap having taken place during the events of Captain America: Civil War. This angered a large portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom, who didn’t like that this meant Rhodes was unaware his best friend, Tony Stark, had died saving the world in Avengers: Endgame.

As fans wait to learn more about the future of Armor Wars, they can revisit Cheadle’s past MCU appearances as War Machine on Disney+.
