Cobie Smulders Confirms She’s Not Done Playing Maria Hill Just Yet

Secret Invasion guest star Cobie Smulders recently shared that her time playing former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill isn’t over yet, despite the character’s demise in the Disney+ limited series’ premiere episode.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about Hill’s fate in the Secret Invasion series premiere, Smulders refused to rule out that this was the last time fans would see the beloved character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“It’s so hard because there’s a multiverse,” Smulders said. “I don’t know, I don’t write these stories. I just show up when they ask me to, and I have been able to be a part of so many amazing productions, films, TV, so I’m only grateful for the time that I have had amongst these beautiful creative people.”

Smulders also revealed that fans will get to see her version of Maria Hill again, just not in the MCU. “I’m still working on [Disney Channel’s] Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated show — I literally recorded some episodes today,” the actor said. “So I have no idea how or when she’s going to come back around to me, but I’m always welcoming the call.”

What happened to Maria Hill in Secret Invasion?

In “Resurrection,” the first episode of Secret Invasion, Smulders’ Maria Hill was on a mission with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to stop a group of rebel Skrulls from detonating bombs and starting a war between Russia and the United States. After failing to stop the bombs from going off, Hill was shot by the rebel Skrulls’ leader, Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who was disguised as Fury. While the series premiere left Hill’s fate ambiguous, the second episode, “Promises,” confirmed that the fan-favorite character had died.

Smulders first appeared as Maria Hill in the 2012 film, Marvel’s The Avengers, which closed out Phase 1 of the MCU. Her next appearance was in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed by smaller roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). She also starred in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), playing a Skrull disguised as Hill. On the small screen, she made several guest appearances in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and voiced a variant of Maria Hill in the animated Disney+ series, What If…?.
