First Trailer and News of Doctor Who’s Single-Story Season 13

As part of Comic-Con@Home’s Doctor Who panel, word (and images) came out about season 13, or as it’s known in the UK, series 13. The biggest news? That it will be a single-story season 13. Per showrunner Chris Chibnall, via Deadline, the COVID lockdown necessitated some drastic narrative choices. But it also hearkens back to the original incarnation’s days as a cliffhanger serial.

“Before we started making it, there were times when we thought we were going to be unable to do the show under Covid conditions this year… there were two ways you could go,” he said. “You could go ‘let’s do lots of tiny little episodes in one room, with no monsters,’ or we could throw down the gauntlet and do the biggest story we’ve ever done. We’re going to go to all kinds of different places, we’re going to have all kinds of characters and monsters, and it’s all going to be part of a bigger whole. It’s definitely the most ambitious thing we’ve done since we’ve been on the series.”

Per the official Doctor Who Twitter feed, some of those monsters will be familiar to fans. But don’t expect to see any of them in this first trailer, which is so spoiler-free it reveals almost nothing:

Well, maybe one thing. Game of Thrones‘ Grey Worm, Jacob Anderson, joins the cast as a character named Vinder. He told the BBC that “from watching and rewatching the serials on VHS as a kid and being terrified, to unexpectedly finding my eyes watering when the Tenth Doctor said ‘I don’t want to go’, I always wanted to live in the Whoniverse.”

The single-story season 13 has no set air date yet, but is expected to begin sometime this year.
