James Gunn Considered Three Projects Before Joining The Suicide Squad

In directing the upcoming soft reboot of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn will join the extremely small club of directors who’ve worked both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe. Warner Bros. hired him after the director was dismissed from helming the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 film. In a matter of hours after his dismissal from Disney, Gunn was in talks with the competition. Warner Bros. offered him the choice between three different projects: one involving SupermanThe Suicide Squad, and an original idea. Ultimately, he opted for the unlikely ensemble of antiheroes.

“Before agreeing to anything, I took the three ideas that excited me the most,” he said while talking with Total Film. “Two were actually DC projects, and then the other one was an original idea. For about a month, every other day I worked on one of those projects, trying to see where the ideas would go. The Suicide Squad really did seem the thing that excited me the most. That’s when I went and told DC – because they’d offered me basically anything [I wanted to make] – that the one I wanted to do was The Suicide Squad.”

The director then added that the producers gave him complete freedom for his project. According to the director, there won’t be anyone to blame if the movie underperforms except for him. What emerges will be the Gunn cut.

“Warner were pretty much on board [with the story] from the beginning – it was pretty much firmly in place from the inception of me taking on the project. They were very trusting of me throughout the entire process, almost to the degree to which I was frightened, because it really is all me, 100 per cent – there’s no one to blame if something goes wrong, except for myself!”

The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and also on HBO Max on August 6.
