The Mandalorian’s Giancarlo Esposito Took Inspiration from Peter Cushing

Actor Giancarlo Esposito had a pretty pivotal role in The Mandalorian Season 2. The 2012 Critics’ Choice Television Awards winner has resumed the role of Moff Gideon, who hunted down The Child across the Outer Rim. The actor recently talked about taking inspiration from Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin for his recent role, confessing that he has always been a huge fan of the early Star Wars movies.

“I always was fascinated by Darth Vader as I thought that inside that very, very hard, coarse exterior could be a human being that had the ability to bring some light to our space odyssey in our galaxy,” Esposito said. “I was strongly affected by Peter Cushing, who also played a Moff many, many years ago. And tried to do some research because I knew the fans knew a whole lot more than I did about Star Wars.”

The actor then spoke about his first day of shooting, involving a standoff with three hundred stormtroopers. You can watch the full video in the player below.

After implanting a tracker on the Razor Crest, Gideon reached The Child and the titular character on Tython. After kidnapping young Grogu thanks to the Darktroopers’ help, the Imperial officer did some experiments on the small Force-sensitive. Eventually, Din Djarin and the rest of the good guys rescued Baby Yoda from the Empire’s clutches. However, Gideon’s real intentions are still a mystery, including who he is taking orders from. Esposito recently teased that fans will have to wait for Season 3 — which likely won’t hit Disney+ before 2022 — to fully know the how and why of Gideon.

The Mandalorian Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
