John Boyega Clears the Air With Kathleen Kennedy Over Star Wars

Not long ago, British actor John Boyega expressed his frustration about how Disney treated his character in the new Star Wars trilogy. Boyega portrayed Finn, a former stormtrooper who joins the Resistance after fleeing the First Order. The actor accused Disney of pushing his character aside for his ethnicity. But it seems that there has been some reconciliation between him and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

“I got on a phone call with Kathleen Kennedy and she verbally showed support and we got to have a really nice, transparent, honest conversation that is beneficial to both of us,” he said in a recent interview with the BBC.  “I think these kinds of conversations, you can go into the realm of sounding like you’re just trying to save your own career, but what is great now is that it is a conversation that anyone has access to.”

The actor added that he expects more black characters — and characters from other cultures in general — to get more heroic moments in the future.

“Now people can express themselves about this knowing that any character we love, especially in these big franchises like the Marvels and Star Wars, we love them because of the moments that they are given, we love them because of those moments, and they’re heroic moments that these producers all decide for these characters so we need to see that in our characters that are maybe black and from other cultures.”

The phone conversation arrived after Boyega expressed openness to returning to a galaxy far, far away for an animated show. However, it doesn’t look like Lucasfilm has any plans for Finn or any other character from the new trilogy. At least, not for the moment. And the actor did not voice Finn in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
