Barring any further delays, fans will get the chance to see Cate Shortland’s Black Widow in theaters in November. After nearly a decade, the former Russian spy gets her standalone movie, which will tackle many current topics besides the usual origin story of a superhero. While speaking with Empire, actress Scarlett Johansson discussed Natasha’s feminism, a subject she’s clearly gotten many questions about.
“I think this film in particular is very much reflective of what’s going on in regards to the Time’s Up movement and the #MeToo movement,” said Johansson. “It would be such a miss if we didn’t address that stuff, if this film didn’t take that head-on. I think, particularly for Cate, it was so important for her to make a movie about women who are helping other women, who lift other women up out of a very difficulty situation. Someone asked me if Natasha was a feminist. Of course she is; it’s obvious.”
Johansson’s Black Widow made her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man 2 back in 2010. Her last appearance so far dates back to Avengers: Endgame, when she sacrificed herself to defeat Thanos. While the fans wait for the last adventure of the Black Widow — at least Johansson’s one — they can check the new still from the upcoming Black Widow movie. It features Natasha Romanoff facing off against the Taskmaster. Check it out below.
Should everything go according to Marvel Studios’ plan, Black Widow will hit theaters on November 6.
