Dune Star Jason Momoa Compares His Duncan Idaho to Han Solo

Well, lots of comparisons are already being made between the upcoming Dune adaptation and the Star Wars saga. And it’s hard not to do it when they even shared some shooting locations. Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres, Dune actor Jason Momoa revealed that they shot in Wadi Rum, the same shooting location in Jordan used for some desert scenes in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

“We got to shoot in Wadi Rum,” Momoa said. “I’ve never seen anything like it, it was like shooting on another planet. Denis Villeneuve is shooting it, who did Sicario and Arrival. It was an honor to do that with him, and it’s a pretty stellar cast, I’ve never been a part of something so big.”

The similarities don’t end there, though. The actor went on to draw a comparison between his Duncan Idaho and none other than Han Solo.

“I get to play this character Duncan Idaho, who’s kind of a master swordsman and the right-hand man to Duke Leto, who is Oscar Isaac’s [character],” he added. “He’s the first person to be sent out to land on Dune, and that’s when I meet the character that Javier Bardem plays. I can’t believe I had a scene with Javier Bardem! It’s him and Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Stellan Skarsgård. It’s a pretty massive film and I get to be this little—he’s kind of the Han Solo-esque of the group. He’s kind of the rogue warrior who protects Timothée Chalamet and serves Oscar Isaac.”

There will be plenty of time to see if Dune can live up to fan expectations. Richard Jordan previously played Idaho in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation.

Dune will hit theaters on Friday, December 18. How do you think Jason Momoa will fare as Duncan Idaho? Do you think that the comparison between Idaho and Solo works? Let us know in the comments section below.
