New Details Emerge About Fox’s X-Men vs. Fantastic Four Movie

Last month, screenwriter Zack Stentz revealed that he had worked on a script for 20th Century Fox that would have brought together all of the Marvel characters held under their umbrella. The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Deadpool would have been in a single film. Additionally, director Paul Greengrass was in talks to helm the crossover movie before the project fell through. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has released new details about what the crossover would have been about.

According to THR, the X-Men vs. Fantastic Four movie would have taken its cue from the Civil War comic that inspired Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War. In this iteration, it would have been Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, who set the spark of the conflict. Apparently, Johnny went “nova while trying to apprehend the villain Molecule Man” and blew a hole in Manhattan. That led to a Superhero Registration Act; which split the heroes on opposite sides.

THR went on to describe a battle between Wolverine and Mr. Fantastic that would have taken a very brutal and wildly out-of-character direction.

“Among the key match ups was a Wolverine vs. Mr. Fantastic battle that ended with Reed Richards pinning Wolverine down, extending his hands until they’re one molecule wide, and using them as scissors to cut the mutant’s arms off.”

Needless to say, Mr. Fantastic’s comic book counterpart doesn’t dismember his foes. The report also mentioned that the heroes would eventually find some resolution before a cliffhanger ending set up the Skrulls’ Secret Invasion as the next threat.

This project was under serious consideration in 2010, back when the MCU was still in its infancy. THR also indicated that comic book writer Warren Ellis wrote his own X-Men vs. Fantastic Four script which was completely separate from the script by Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller.
