As the new Hellboy inches closer to its April release date, Entertainment Weekly has given another glimpse of the film, while star David K. Harbour (Stranger Things) explains his character’s motivations and how it will factor into the film’s overall story.
“He’s been Hellboy for a long time, but there’s a new turn of events at the start of the film, where people start to bring up the fact that he might bring about the end of the world, and it’s really the first time he’s heard anything like that,” Harbour said. “The question that comes up in the movie is where does he really belong?”
Harbour also explained the role of the film’s villain, Nimue the Blood Queen, played by Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, The Fifth Element), and how the filmmakers tried to make her more than a two-dimensional villain. “She was brought up in a culture that treated her kind a certain way, and it wasn’t always deserving. That’s the point that becomes compelling to Hellboy and spins his head around.”
Based on the acclaimed graphic novels by Mike Mignola, the story centers around Hellboy as he’s caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human and battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
Harbour stars as the title character in the upcoming film and is joined by Jovovich, Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) as Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (aka Professor Broom), Sasha Lane (American Honey) will play Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell (Hemlock Grove) will play the elder witch Ganeida, and Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0, LOST) as Major Ben Daimio.
Hellboy is directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) from a script by Andrew Cosby (Eureka), Christopher Golden and Mignola himself. Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin will produce with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.
