Lucifer Season Four Picked Up by Netflix

Lucifer Season Four Picked Up by Netflix

Fox might have had fun cancelling fan-favorite shows this season, but other networks are enjoying the love that audiences are pouring upon them as they’ve come in to save their shows. NBC first picked up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a sixth season and now Netflix has picked up fantasy police procedural Lucifer for a fourth season!

Based on the Vertigo character, Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar abandoned his throne and retired to Los Angeles, where he has teamed up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker to take down criminals. The show ranks 10th and eighth among all FOX dramas this TV season and is down 20% in the demo from its sophomore season. Lucifer is averaging a 0.8 demo rating and 3.3 million total weekly viewers through April 30th.

The cancellation news from the beginning of May gutted fans, who began a social media outcry for another network to save the series with the hashtag “#SaveLucifer,” which landed as the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter for a short while. Cast members from the show, including Tom Ellis and Aimee Garcia, had been very appreciative of all of the fan support and held out hope in interviews that there was still a chance and after producer Warner Bros. TV shopped it around to other networks, Netflix is the savior for the series.

The announcement that Netflix is renewing Lucifer also comes at the time that the streaming service was also reportedly looking at reviving recently-cancelled ABC drama Designated Survivor, but the pick up of the former Fox drama leaves the question open as to whether they are still seeking to save the Kiefer Sutherland-led series.

Lucifer is produced by Warner Bros. Television, in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Aggressive Mediocrity. The series is based on characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for Vertigo, from DC Entertainment and is executive-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson. Len Wiseman serves as director and executive producer. Kapinos serves as executive consultant on the series.
