Danny McBride Talks Alien: Covenant Role, New Creature Lends a Hand

Production is already underway for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien: Covenant and one of the most curious additions to the cast is none other than Eastbound & Down star Danny McBride. Speaking with Rolling Stone (Via CBM), he revealed a little more about his role.

“I’m the pilot of the spaceship Covenant, which is a colonization ship, searching for a planet where we might start life anew.”

Fans will also be pleased to know that, as McBride reveals, there will be plenty of practical effects on the new film.

“Most of the stuff is practical effects: when you’re running from an alien it’s really a dude in an alien suit coming after you! The sets are incredible and you’re in them: We go through some inclement weather at one point on the spaceship and this whole gigantic set is on a gimbal, shaking up and down. You don’t have to use your imagination.”

In a fortuitous coincidence, 20th Century Fox shared a gif from the set of one of the practical elements which looks suspiciously like a Xenomorph’s hand, albeit with some minor changes. Check it out below!

Michael Fassbender (reprising his Prometheus role) stars in the film along with Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Jussie Smolett (Empire), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), and Billy Crudup (Watchmen).

Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PrometheusAlien: Covenant connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Michael Green (Green Lantern) are providing the Alien: Covenant screenplay, which Ridley Scott will once again direct. 20th Century Fox is set to distribute the film in theaters on August 4, 2017.
