Resident Evil’s Gory First Clip Has Fans Expecting Zach Cregger’s Bloodiest Movie Yet

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil aired an exclusive clip at PlayStation’s State of Play. The footage that has been shown has fans believing that the movie might be the goriest thing Cregger has ever written or directed. The movie will serve as the first installment in the second reboot of the franchise, and the eighth entry in the live-action film series overall.

Fans have already split into camps about the look of the film, based on the trailer that Sony released a month ago. The first look has intensified those discussions online, with one set of fans applauding the approach, while others criticising the visuals for being so distinct from the game.

Resident Evil movie cast, story and release date

The clip shown at the State of Play focused on Austin Abrams‘ Bryan, a medical courier. Apart from Abrams, the film also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson. Cregger co-wrote the film with Shay Hatten.

The story is going to follow Bryan as he is in the middle of delivering a medical courier. Everything begins going haywire when he is caught in the middle of an outbreak. He is then forced to figure out a way to survive Raccoon City’s now-dangerous environment. Zach Cregger revealed that the story of the film is going to be a completely original narrative, without any of the characters from the games making an appearance. Regarding this decision, he said, “It is obedient to the lore of the games; it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”

It won’t be the first time that the franchise has decided to work with an original character in an adaptation, as seen in 2002’s Resident Evil (and its sequels) with Milla Jovovich’s character.

The film is set to be released in theatres on September 18, 2026.
