With Hayley Atwell returning for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel can finally give her the memorable MCU moment they robbed her of.
In 2022, Atwell made a surprise appearance as Peggy Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This version of Peggy was Captain Carter, dressed in the superhero suit and sporting a shield. Captain Carter is a member of the Illuminati in Earth-838. Unfortunately for Atwell, her time as Captain Carter was short-lived, as Wanda Maximoff kills her after only a few moments on-screen.
During a recent appearance at For the Love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Atwell spoke about her disappointment with the cameo in Doctor Strange 2.
“I loved the idea that she’d be in a suit and have the shields. But if I’m really brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbee’d to death,” said Atwell via @francesinlondon on Instagram. “I felt like that was a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.”
Marvel did Atwell no favors by killing her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Luckily for Marvel, they have a chance to redeem themself in Avengers: Doomsday.
How Avengers: Doomsday can redeem Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter
Once the Multiverse Saga was announced, many fans were looking forward to seeing Peggy as Captain Carter. This alternate version of Peggy is her universe’s Captain America-like hero. She takes the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. However, the cameo in Doctor Strange 2 ruined Atwell’s Captain Carter moment.
Atwell has been confirmed for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. She will reprise her role as Peggy Carter. One likely scenario is that she shows up as the version that appeared with Steve in the final moment of Avengers: Endgame.
That doesn’t have to be the only version of Peggy to appear. Avengers: Doomsday is all about bringing together heroes from multiple universes and different timelines to fight Doctor Doom. Marvel could easily bring back Captain Carter as one of the heroes to join the fight.
Atwell has been in the MCU since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Carter has voiced Captain Carter on What If…?, but she deserves a better live-action moment than a glorified cameo. Think about how special it was to watch Captain America wield Thor’s hammer. Seeing Captain Carter fight alongside the Avengers could provide another unforgettable moment for MCU fans in Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s time to reward Atwell for her loyalty to the MCU by letting her shine as Captain Carter once more.
