The title for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 may have been revealed.
Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy Group’s Sonic film franchise began in 2020 with Sonic the Hedgehog. That was followed by two sequels, 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, while there was also a spin-off TV series titled Knuckles that premiered in 2024. Jeff Fowler directed all three films and the Knuckles pilot.
A fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie is in the works and is scheduled to arrive in 2027. Not many details about the project have been revealed up until this point.
What is the new Sonic the Hedgehog 4 rumor?
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the official title for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could wind up being Sonic CD. This would be a nod to the 1993 platform game, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, which introduced time travel as a game mechanic.
This would make sense given that the post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 formally introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic into the film franchise, as the Sonic CD game was where both characters originally debuted. Additionally, Richtman said that Sonic 4 will explore a “darker future,” though further information beyond that is not available at this time.
This is just a rumor at this time and should be treated as such, as there’s been no official announcement from Paramount Pictures regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s plot or title.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 wound up being a huge hit for the studio. It grossed approximately $492.2 million globally off an estimated $122 million budget, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It is also the third-highest-grossing video game movie of all time behind 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and 2025’s A Minecraft Movie, while it came in tenth place for the highest-grossing movies of 2024.
