Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Gets New Update From Producer Jerry Bruckheimer

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently confirmed that the upcoming sixth movie in the franchise will be a reboot.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his new movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Bruckheimer was asked which of his popular franchises would release a new installment first: Top Gun or Pirates of the Caribbean.

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer said. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor [Tom Cruise] who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

What will Pirates of the Caribbean 6 be about?

A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been stuck in pre-production at Disney since 2011. The movie was originally going to serve as a continuation of the fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), until franchise star Johnny Depp was removed from the project due to his legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard.

In 2020, a female-led Pirates spinoff movie was announced with Margot Robbie attached to star. However, the actor revealed two years later that the project was dead, stating that, while a “really cool” idea, Disney didn’t “want to do it.”

The last official update on Pirates of the Caribbean 6 came in 2023 when The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin revealed to The LA Times that Disney had bought his and Ted Elliot’s “fantastic” script, but that the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes had halted any forward movement on the movie. While Mazin is a new addition to the franchise, Elliot co-wrote the first four Pirates of the Caribbean films with his writing partner Terry Rossio.

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are available to stream on Disney+.
