The Next Ghostbusters Movie is Codenamed “Firehouse,” Animated Feature Coming Too

The Next Ghostbusters Movie is Codenamed “Firehouse”

Two years from today, Ghostbusters will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film that started it all. But the franchise has plenty of things in the works between now and then. At this year’s Ghostbusters Day event, director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan dropped some big announcements about the future of the franchise. And it turns out that the newly revealed Netflix Ghostbusters animated series is just a small part of the plan. According to Reitman and Kenan, the next live-action movie is codenamed “Firehouse.”

“We’re writing another movie,” said Reitman via Twitter. “Tonight, we’re going to share the code name for the next chapter in the Spengler family story. The last time we saw Ecto-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters. That’s where our story begins. The code name is Firehouse.”

The post-credits scene of Ghostbusters: Afterlife did set up a sequel when it was revealed that Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) is independently wealthy, and also the owner of the Ghostbusters’ former firehouse headquarters. However, Winston didn’t notice an alarm going off in ecto-containment unit while he dropped off Ecto-1 at the firehouse.

While speaking to THR, Reitman added “The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters.”

Additionally, Reitman and Kenan announced a new animated Ghostbusters movie written by Brenda Hsueh and directed by Jennifer Kluska & Chris Prynoski. It is currently in development “with all new characters and a whole new take.” That said, the new Netflix animated series “will create the next generation of Ghostbusters” and “navigate an unexplored era of the Ghostbusters Canon.”

Finally, the duo revealed that Ghostbusters will be coming back to comics in late 2023 via Dark Horse Comics. It will be an “in-canon” limited series that will bridge the gap between Afterlife and Firehouse.
