Casting is finally underway for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder has chosen Sofia Boutella to headline his upcoming sci-fi epic. The film will be released exclusively on Netflix.
Snyder previously announced his plans for Rebel Moon back in July. The movie recycles an idea Snyder had for a standalone Star Wars entry inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films. According to the official logline, the story takes place at the far reaches of space, where a peaceful colony is threatened by the tyrant known as Regent Balisarius. In order to stave off his armies’ attack, a young woman with a mysterious past travels to neighboring worlds to find warriors who will come to her planet’s aid. Presumably, Boutella is playing this woman in the film.
Rebel Moon marks the first project that falls under Snyder’s first-look deal with Netflix, which he signed after the success of Army of the Dead earlier this year. In addition to fleshing out the AotD universe (which includes plans for multiple spinoffs along with a proper sequel, Planet of the Dead), his upcoming slate also includes Twilight of the Gods, an anime series inspired by Norse mythology.

Boutella has plenty of genre experience to prepare her for her starring turn in Rebel Moon. She previously appeared as the title character in Universal’s ill-fated reboot of The Mummy in 2017. Fans might also recognize her from her appearances in Atomic Blonde, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Star Trek Beyond.
Snyder co-wrote the screenplay for Rebel Moon alongside Army of the Dead scribe Shay Hatten and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad. Production will reportedly begin in early 2022.
