The Matrix Resurrections Has Been Rated R for Violence and Language

It seems that the Chosen One won’t have to worry about minding his mouth in The Matrix Resurrections. The upcoming movie by Lana Wachowski has just received its rating, and, as many expected, it’s been rated R. “Violence and some language,” is the official reason. All the previous installments in the franchise received the same rating, as the story featured violent action, scurrilous language, and some sexuality/nudity. The second film became the highest grossing R-rated movie ever at the time, only bested finally by the Deadpool movies and Joker.

Fans can expect to see at least some blood flowing in Resurrections for the return of the iconic characters from the original trilogy, Neo and Trinity. Hopefully, the story will explain how they can still be alive after what happened in Revolutions. Many details remain under wraps, but the promotional materials showed a futuristic San Francisco, with Neo back to his everyday life as Thomas Anderson.

In addition to the characters portrayed by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, Resurrections will bring a few familiar faces back. These include Jada Pinkett Smith’s Niobe, Lambert Wilson’s The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt’s Agent Johnson. However, neither Laurence Fishburne nor Hugo Weaving will reprise their roles as Morpheus and Agent Smith, respectively. It will be up to Aquaman vet Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to portray the iconic Morpheus in a new way.

The Matrix Resurrections will debut in theaters and HBO Max on December 22.
