James Gunn Hints At a Character Debut In Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Last year, Marvel surprised fans with the news that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will drop next year on Disney+ ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This new special is an obvious riff on the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which George Lucas quickly disavowed. Regardless, The Star Wars Holiday Special made an impact on the franchise by introducing Boba Fett in an animated short.

Recently, a fan asked director James Gunn if the Guardians’ special will also introduce a new character. In response, Gunn somewhat facetiously suggested that he will “be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a mid-credits scene that seemed to set the stage for Adam Warlock’s MCU debut. However, Warlock is a major character whose first appearance will likely be saved for the big screen. It’s unclear which character Gunn is actually referring to, assuming that he isn’t joking.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be filmed concurrently with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Additionally, Gunn and the cast will film scenes for the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride for Disney World as well. The special will premiere on Disney + during the 2022 holiday season. And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
