Concept Artist Comments on the Look of [SPOILER] in Shang-Chi

Warning: SPOILERS for Shang-Chi below!

After so much anticipation, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuted in theaters and brought a breath of fresh air into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie introduced the Dweller-in-Darkness, one of the Fear Lords from the comics, now featuring a completely different look. Many fans were surprised by it. And that’s why artist Jerad Marantz shared a few details about the creative process behind its revamped appearance on his socials.

“My biggest hurtle [sic] with my work at marvel is that I tend to lean too scary,” he wrote. “I often get that note and have to dial things back a bit. Surprisingly, this time not so much. I still can’t believe this guy got on screen. He was actually pretty terrifying. My favorite elements of the design are the many tales[sic]/tendrils coming off of his back and wings. I knew that the creature would be too large to have any real interaction with the human characters if he didn’t have something that he could actually used to fight them. I was looking at a lot of Chinese Kites for inspiration there, trying to tie in some cultural element to the design.”

In the movie, the demon was released by Wenwu thanks to the Ten Rings, which did not go well for him. It was up to the titular hero and his friends to defeat it afterward.
