The sequel to Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie has just lined up a major new addition to the cast. Fresh off of his starring role in The Suicide Squad, Idris Elba has been cast as Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Knuckles made his debut as a rival to Sonic in Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, Sega gave Knuckles a co-headlining role in the follow up game, Sonic & Knuckles. Since then, Knuckles has largely been a friend and ally to Sonic.
Ben Schwartz played Sonic in the first film, which was an unexpected pre-pandemic hit in 2020. Schwartz was also joined by Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, with James Marsden as Tom Wachowski. Tika Sumpter also co-starred as Tom’s wife, Maddie Wachowsk. Colleen O’Shaughnessey also provided the voice of Sonic’s partner, Tails, in a mid-credits scene.
Additionally, Shemar Moore recently joined the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in a mystery role. Most of the original cast is back for the sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
