Henry Cavill May Star in Lionsgate’s Highlander Reboot

The long-awaited Highlander reboot may have found its leading man…or one of them, at least. According to Deadline, the film’s producers are courting Henry Cavill to headline their re-worked version of the 1986 fantasy film.

A new Highlander movie has been in the works for over 10 years, but it’s had a rocky road through development. In that timeframe, the film has changed up everything from its studio to potential cast members, with actors like Ryan Reynolds and Dave Bautista attached at various points. The project has also seen many directors come and go (including Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Justin Lin) before Chad Stahelski signed on to helm the movie in 2016.

The original film starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a swordsman who discovers he possesses an energy known as “the Quickening,” which makes him immortal. It’s not clear if Cavill will play Connor in the reboot or a brand new Highlander altogether. Regardless, his involvement is apparently key to getting the new movie off the ground. Deadline’s sources claim that “these latest pieces coming together put this film into position to get into production.”

This won’t be Cavill’s first role as a superpowered swordsman. He currently stars as Geralt on Netflix’s The Witcher. And if he officially comes aboard the Highlander reboot, it will add yet another big-name blockbuster franchise to his resume. Cavill was most recently seen as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and he will reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes in a sequel to Enola Holmes.

Highlander doesn’t currently have a release date.
