Cat Vasko Will Write Warner Bros.’ Female-Led Plastic Man Movie

Two years ago, word broke that Warner Bros. was developing a Plastic Man movie. The announcement elicited many an eyebrow-raise from even the most diehard DC fans. But now, things are about to get even weirder. According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB execs want to re-tool the project so that a woman can play the title role. The studio has even hired Cat Vasko to write the script.

Vasko is an up-and-comer in the industry. One of her earliest screenplays was titled Situation Comedy and earned a spot on the infamous Black List in 2014. In 2017, she was hired to adapt Fierce Kingdom, based on Gin Phillips’ novel of the same name. Margot Robbie was onboard the film as a producer, but that project doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere in the last three years. However, she’s also working with Robbie on Queen of the Air, which tells the story of trapeze artist Lillian Leitzel.

WB previously enlisted Amanda Idoko to write the Plastic Man movie. Apparently, Idoko’s script was a “comedic action-adventure,” but it’s not clear if that’s still the plan now that Vasko is taking over. Plastic Man was originally introduced in 1941 as the alias of Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, a small-time crook and expert safe-cracker. An accident during a botched robbery at a chemical plant left him with polymorphic abilities, which he began using to fight crime as a superhero.  It wasn’t until 1956 that the character became part of the DC Universe.
