Stars Talk About the ‘Incredible Depth’ of The Matrix 4’s Script

Many fans were surprised when Warner Bros. announced that The Matrix was returning in 2019. But The Matrix 4 is happening for real and is bringing back several key cast members from the original trilogy. Speaking with Empire, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss talked about the upcoming movie in enthusiastic terms.

“When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.’ It was just very exciting,” Moss confessed.

Even though his character seemed to perish in The Matrix Revolutions, Keanu Reeves couldn’t be happier that Lana Wachowski is writing and directing a new sequel.

“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me,” he said. “That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”

Fans won’t see Reeves’ Neo locking horns with Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith, though, as the Australian actor won’t reprise his iconic role. But for many, The Matrix 4 will be a sort of family reunion as the sequel will reunite several behind-the-scenes crew members from the first three movies as well.

Warner Bros. planned to release The Matrix 4 in 2021 but has yet to set a firm premiere date.
