Jeffrey Wright Says The Batman Is the Next Evolution of Gotham City

The Batman may be on hiatus for now, but bringing director Matt Reeves’ vision to life is still the cast’s ultimate goal. In the film, Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright will portray Commissioner James Gordon opposite Robter Pattinson’s Dark Knight. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Wright appeared on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show and explained how the cast is working with Reeves to create the tone of the film. He also stressed that their collective efforts are creating something new for the screen.

“This is the next evolution of Gotham,” said Wright. “So I am working off the stage Matt [Reeves] is providing and also working off what Robert [Pattinson] is doing. We are trying to create something together that is our own, but is also Batman.”

Additionally, Wright cited the new Batmobile as an example of the film’s grounded take on the material.

“I read the script for the Batmobile and I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s it,’” recalled Wright. “[Bruce Wayne] created the most badass muscle car you could imagine, but it’s grounded in Gotham. It’s grounded in Americana.”

The Batman will hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
