Spider-Man: Far From Home

Jon Watts May Return To Direct Sony and Marvel’s Next Spider-Man Film

Jon Watts is Returning to Direct Sony and Marvel’s Next Spider-Man Film

MCU fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when news broke that the month-long stalemate between Sony and Marvel Studios over Spider-Man’s film rights has finally ended. Now, Spidey’s cinematic future is looking even brighter. Deadline is reporting that Jon Watts is in “final talks” to helm the follow-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Since Far From Home became Sony’s highest-grossing film, Watts’ return to the director’s chair isn’t that surprising. However, it’s worth noting that Watts was oddly quiet after talks between Sony and Marvel broke down. He never released a statement outlining his feelings on the matter or whether he was still willing to come back for a third installment. In the interim, the two studios reportedly tried to recruit him for different upcoming Marvel movies.

Deadline’s sources indicate that Watts’ deal will be finalized “very soon.” With this, he can finish telling the story he began in 2017 with Spider-Man: Homecoming and preserve the franchise’s continuity. Under the terms of the studios’ new agreement, Disney and Marvel are apparently receiving 25% of the movie’s profits. This is a significant bump up from their original compensation of 5% of first-dollar grosses for any Spidey flicks.

Of course, this isn’t the number they initially had in mind. The dispute with Sony allegedly stemmed from Marvel’s request for a 50-50 split on box office proceeds. Spider-Man’s next movie will open on July 16, 2021.
