Far From Home Creative Team Explains Endgame’s Effect on the Final Film

As epic as Avengers: Endgame was, Spider-Man: Far From Home will offer a reprieve from the world-ending cataclysm of Marvel’s team-up films. Even though the MCU’s various standalone films give each character his or her moment to shine, the studio still has to consider the bigger picture. That’s why Far From Home’s creative minds had to be among the first to know how the Infinity Saga finale would play out.

Far From Home screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers shared insight into their writing process with The Hollywood Reporter. The duo learned “early on” that Endgame would feature a five-year time jump and conclude with Tony Stark’s demise. After this, they began discussing the aftermath of the Decimation’s reversal and how they could show this in their script.

“We had so many conversations,” said McKenna. “If half of life in the universe was snapped does that include pets? E.coli?”

Other Far From Home crew members were taken aback as well, including editors Dan Lebental and Leigh Folsom Boyd. Apparently, Boyd was under the impression that all of the main Avengers would be killed off by the time the credits rolled on Endgame. And since the editing process was already underway, they needed to shift course and make the appropriate tweaks.

“They did show us Endgame early, but way into the process on this film,” said Lebental. “At a certain point we had our conceptions of what Endgame was but then I saw it. ‘OK. We need to make a few adjustments.’

Lebental went on to explain that the film’s overall tone needed to be fine-tuned. “We did have to adjust it to feel light, and then it became really make it the father son connection between Tony Stark and Peter.”

Spider-Man: Far From Home lands in theaters on Tuesday, July 2. You can share your thoughts on these latest remarks in the comment section below!
