Quentin Tarantino Says His Star Trek Movie is a ‘Very Big Possibility’

Director Quentin Tarantino is quite busy these days, but he wouldn’t mind boldly going with his proposed Star Trek film. Even though it hasn’t made much progress lately, he recently addressed the project in an interview with Slashfilm. While speaking about his movie-turned-miniseries The Hateful Eight on Netflix, a question about his proposed Star Trek movie came up.

“The script has been written,” explained Tarantino. “And when I emerge my heard like Punxsutawney Phil, post-Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, we’ll pick up talking about it again.”

Discussion for Tarantino helming a fourth entry in the franchise began years ago. While details about Tarantino’s pitch aren’t public at the moment, he definitely wants to take the R-rated approach. At one point, Star Trek co-star Karl Urban even called his treatment on the franchise “bananas.” (We assume in a good way.)

The last word about Tarantino’s Star Trek was back in late 2017. At that point, The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith was a top choice to write the screenplay by Paramount. Tarantino didn’t say whether or not the finished screenplay was his or Smith’s.

Star Trek Beyond opened back in 2016, but the reboot cast hasn’t reunited since. While general audiences enjoyed the film, it didn’t perform well at the box office. Its domestic take was nearly $100 million less than the J.J. Abrams helmed Star Trek film.

However, Star Trek is a fresh franchise again, thanks to CBS All Access. The second season of Star Trek: Discovery just came to a close. CBS All Access also has an animated series in the works, along with a show featuring Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard.
