What Song Plays in Stranger Things Season 5 Trailer: Meaning Explained

When the Stranger Things Season 5 trailer dropped, fans got hit with both nostalgia and dread. The trailer marks the beginning of the end for the beloved Netflix series that first captured hearts back in 2016.

The trailer shows a wrecked Hawkins, Vecna, and the gang back together, but one thing that stood out the most was Queen’s classic track “Who Wants to Live Forever” blasting in the background.

If you’re wondering what this song is and what it means for the final chapter of Stranger Things, here is everything we know.

Which song plays in the Stranger Things Season 5 trailer?

The standout moment in the new Stranger Things Season 5 trailer was no doubt Queen’s iconic track “Who Wants to Live Forever.” The song, written by guitarist Brian May back in 1986 for the movie Highlander, perfectly sets the tone for the show’s final stretch.

The trailer, which dropped on Netflix on October 30, 2025, begins with the line, “At long last, we can begin.” From there, the track builds as we get a glimpse of everything that has been going on in Hawkins, narrated by Dustin, followed by Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven.

Originally written for Highlander, a movie about an immortal warrior battling through the ages, Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever” explores themes like mortality, loss, and the price of time.

Stranger Things season 5 seems to be on the same level, with the Hawkins crew once again facing a force far greater and powerful than them, Vecna. So, using this song makes total sense. It might even be teasing that some fan-favorite characters who once survived everything could be in real danger this time around.

Beyond the song’s original meaning, the Stranger Things trailer shows Hawkins in ruins, and Vecna closer than ever to wiping out the human world.

Even co-creator Ross Duffer said that this time, things will be different. He claimed, “I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. “We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start,” Duffer added (via the wrap).
