When Does Marvel Zombies Take Place? MCU Canon & Timeline Explained

The recent conclusion of Marvel Zombies has left fans wondering when and where the show takes place. With MCU churning out a plethora of epic movies and shows each year, keeping track of the timeline can get tricky. So, here’s everything you need to know about Marvel Zombies’ place in the MCU canon.

Where is Marvel Zombies set in MCU canon?

Although Marvel Zombies is canon in the MCU, it does not take place in the Earth-616 timeline that fans are more familiar with. The events of the four-part miniseries happen in an alternate universe where the beloved heroes have been infected by a zombie virus, turning them into flesh-eating undead.

Therefore, whatever has happened, the series will have no impact on the primary MCU timeline of the movies and shows. Similarly, the upcoming MCU projects will not feature any zombified MCU hero.

When does Marvel Zombies take place in MCU timeline?

Marvel Zombies reportedly takes place five years after the fifth episode of the MCU’s What If…? season 1. Episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” took place in the alternate universe’s 2018. So, Marvel Zombies happens in 2023, or essentially the Endgame era of that timeline.

In the What If…? episode, it was Janet van Dyne who brought about the infection from the Quantum Realm. Marvel Zombies begins after the zombie apocalypse spreads in San Francisco. Additionally, “What If… Zombies?!” ended on a cliffhanger with the heroes ready to take on zombie Thanos in Wakanda. We see a glimpse of the fight in Marvel Zombies in the scene where T’Challa defeats Thanos.

As of writing, Disney has yet to renew Marvel Zombies for a second season. However, creators remain hopeful about the show’s future. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum stated, “Please, like, people have got to subscribe to Disney+ and watch this show. If that happens, they will get more. And we are excited. We’re ready.”

For now, the wait continues for an official greenlight from Disney. Fans can look forward to returning to the familiar timeline with the upcoming MCU projects, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday.
