The Conjuring: Last Rites concluded the saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren and brought some big changes to the franchise, including a major character death. This had not happened in the previous movies and added a layer of unpredictability to the story. So, who dies in The Conjuring: Last Rites?

Who dies in The Conjuring 4: Last Rites and how?
Though Ed, Judy, and Lorraine Warren all survived, along with the members of the Smurl family in The Conjuring 4: Last Rites, Father Gordon was not as fortunate. Father Gordon had been an integral part of the story and had helped the Warrens multiple times before with their demonic battles.
Father Gordon initially investigated the Smurl family haunting. At the same time, Ed and Lorraine were almost retired by the time these events took place. The priest investigated their house without the permission of the Catholic Church, which meant no one else knew.
After failing to fend off the demonic entity with holy water, Father Gordon went to the Diocese of Scranton in Pennsylvania to ask for official help from the Church. However, the demonic entity was so strong that it managed to follow Father Gordon into the Church.
While inside the Church, the demon made Father Gordon experience a distorted reality, ultimately leading to his committing suicide. The harrowing death was the first major character death in The Conjuring franchise.
Other characters, including the Smurl family members, their dog, and the Warrens, all survived the demonic haunting. However, this case was more difficult than any they had faced before.
The film marked the end of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s run. The franchise may continue with spinoffs or in another direction, but the Warrens will no longer be the central characters.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is now playing in theatres.
