Why Reed Richards Barely Uses His Powers in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps may have become the most successful live-action adaptation of Fantastic Four so far, and a fascinating entry into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but it left some fans dissatisfied with the lack of screentime for Reed Richards’ powers. While Pedro Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic was present throughout the movie, he did not showcase his stretching powers very often.

There could be some reasons behind this.

Why Reed Richards doesn’t use his powers to full potential in Fantastic Four

In the comics, Reed Richards’ stretching is a phenomenal power that has even halted the mighty Galactus. Yet, in the movie, his powers were significantly downplayed, with Mister Fantastic having little impact in the final fight.

One reason for this could be the challenges of executing stretch scenes, which include high costs and intense CGI work. While Marvel can afford it, they may choose not to use it unless the plot absolutely demands it. In this case, it seems to be both cost-effective and narratively strategic to avoid showcasing Reed Richards in his most utilitarian form.

The narrative explanation centers on Reed being the “brains” of the group. In First Steps, Reed Richards is primarily portrayed as the one planning everything. This is a major reason he does not lead with his physical skills. Instead, he leads as the strategist of the family.

Additionally, during the final fight, when Galactus stretches him, he appears to feel pain. This suggests that his stretching ability still has limits. Marvel may have deliberately chosen this to allow for future character development. The creators have not fully explored all of Reed’s powers or limits yet, which leaves room for growth in future installments.

This also implies that Reed may have to rise to the occasion when absolutely necessary. Such moments will test his limits and push him further. By withholding a fully developed Mister Fantastic in the beginning, Marvel may be planning a gradual build-up for his character.

Therefore, Reed Richards not being as powerful as his contemporaries could serve both as a narrative strategy and a practical production decision.

Perhaps Avengers: Doomsday will feature Reed stepping up and utilizing his full abilities.
