Compared to initial projections in a late June report, which had the film earning $19-28 million for the opening weekend and $42-$75 million domestically overall, this is quite a drop. That’s roughly a 15 to 20 percent decrease on both the lower end and upper end predictions
This dip is partly a result of the movie being “behind the pacing of high-performing legacy horror franchise sequels such as Final Destination: Bloodlines, Scream VI, and the recent Halloween films.” The site had previously considered this in prior reports and is waiting to see “if interest picks up” by the movie’s launch.
Unfortunately for I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025, it’s sandwiched between Superman 2025 that released on July 11 in the US and The Fantastic Four: First Steps which will release nationwide on July 25. Then in a bit of confusion, this fourth film in the franchise is a sequel to the second installment, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, that released in 1998. Plans for the film were in the works back in 2014, but they were revived after the 2021 TV adaptation for the series was cancelled.
By the time of writing, the Rotten Tomatoes score for the 2025 film is at middling 44%, with some critics liking that is it is a self-aware legacy sequel but others saying that it is still unsatisfying.
