Ballerina has become another acclaimed John Wick spin-off, with Ana de Armas successfully mirroring the best parts of Keanu Reeves’ character. But is there an issue with Ballerina’s timeline that does not quite align with the previous John Wick movies?
When does Ballerina take place in the John Wick timeline?
With the popularity of the original action film series, it was clear that John Wick would eventually go on to spawn spin-offs and eventually an entire universe.
But Ballerina also seems to cause a problem within the timeline of that universe as part of it clashes with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The Ana de Armas movie takes place during the events of John Wick 3 and before John Wick 4. This timeline also explains why Keanu Reeves appears in the film. However, the timeline creates a gaping plot hole in the franchise.
Does Ballerina create a John Wick 3 plot hole?
Unless the future movies explain something about it, Ballerina does have a plot hole that is hard to overlook. Since Eve and John team up in this movie, which takes place during John Wick 3, one detail stands out. In the third film, the Director shunned John from the Ruska Roma for good after helping him get safe passage. For this, the Director was punished by the High Table.
But, during Ballerina, the Director asks John to deal with Eve. This is a plot hole because not only was John actively trying to save his life after being excommunicated, but the Director had already shunned him from the Ruska Roma. Therefore, she shouldn’t be turning to John for help at this point. Her involvement at this stage seems to somewhat contradict the events previously established in the storyline and create a plot hole when considering the events of John Wick 3.
Ballerina is currently playing in theaters.
