Who Is Metamorpho in Superman? Kryptonite Powers Explained

The Superman trailer was recently released, and fans are buzzing about a new character in the DC Universe — Metamorpho. Played by Anthony Carrigan, the character’s real name in the comics is Rex Mason. While the initial teaser offered only a glimpse of his appearance, the new trailer provides insight into his powers.

So, without further ado, here’s a look at Metamorpho and his abilities.

Metamorpho’s origin in Superman and comics explained

Metamorpho debuted in The Brave and the Bold #57, released in 1965. In the comics, Rex Mason was a soldier hired by industrialist Simon Stagg to retrieve the Orb of Ra, an artifact originally discovered by the Egyptian priest Ahk-Ton during Pharaoh Ramses II’s reign. Ahk-Ton had forged the orb from a fallen meteor.

On his mission, Rex found the orb but was betrayed by his cohort, Java, who stole it and left Rex behind. Exposed to the meteor, Rex’s body was permanently altered. He sought help from the Justice League of America to return to his original form, but they couldn’t reverse the transformation. Eventually, he accepted his new identity and appearance, embracing the powers that came with it.

How do Metamorpho’s powers allow him to create Kryptonite in Superman?

Metamorpho possesses elemental transmutation, allowing him to convert his body into various chemical compounds. He can change his form at will, as demonstrated in the trailer when he examines his hand as it transforms into green Kryptonite.

He also has the power of Metamorphosis, enabling him to mold parts of his body into complex shapes. Through Bio-Fission, he can generate speaking duplicates of himself. His Molecular Reconstruction ability allows him to manipulate matter at the submolecular level, even altering the structure of other objects from a distance.

In addition, Metamorpho can reshape his physiology, exhibits elasticity, and can enter a flight mode. His body provides natural armor, granting him enhanced durability.
