Thunderbolts* Asterisk Meaning Finally Explained by Movie’s Ending

Wondering what the asterisk in Thunderbolts* really means? The final scenes drop a major reveal that rebrands the team, reshapes their purpose, and confirms a theory that had fans speculating for months. As a press conference takes a surprising turn and a new name flashes on screen, the true meaning behind the symbol finally comes into focus.

Here’s what the asterisk stands for in Thunderbolts* and how it changes everything.

What does the asterisk mean in Thunderbolts*?

Thunderbolts* reveals the meaning behind its asterisk during its final scenes.  After defeating The Void and confronting Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the team is introduced to the public as the “New Avengers” during a press conference arranged by Valentina. The announcement confirms that the asterisk in Thunderbolts* stands for the team’s rebranding under government sanction.

The title card at the end of the film shows the “Thunderbolts” logo transforming into “The New Avengers.” This visually confirms the shift. The asterisk, absent when the film was first announced, had been the subject of speculation, with early reports suggesting it referenced the New Avengers name.

The rebranding happens after Valentina protects her reputation by framing the Thunderbolts as a secret project she created. Yelena Belova tells her the team now “owns” her, implying they’ve secured resources and autonomy. They now operate from The Watchtower. The asterisk reflects this transition and the conditions behind their formation.

In the mid-credits scene set 14 months later, Red Guardian jokingly suggests alternate team names like “New Avengerz.” The group discusses a lawsuit filed by Sam Wilson for their unauthorized use of the Avengers name. Bob expresses concern about becoming The Sentry again, fearing he might unleash The Void.

The asterisk ties directly into the story, marking the team’s government-sanctioned status and their new role in the MCU. The film ends with the New Avengers witnessing the arrival of the Fantastic Four on Earth-616. This moment sets up future events in Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday.

Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Schreier and stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Lewis Pullman.

Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters.
