Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Unveils the Celestial Eson

Nearly five years ago, Disney’s California Adventure opened its first Marvel ride, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!. Next month, Walt Disney World’s EPCOT is getting one of its own. In fact, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will open on May 27, five years to the day after Mission: Breakout! made its official premiere. And just as Mission: Breakout! used a threat from the first film, so too will Cosmic Rewind. Celestial Eson.

Via Marvel.com, the primary antagonist in the Cosmic Rewind attraction is the Celestial known as Eson. Jack Kirby created Eson in the pages of The Eternals, and he has already been briefly glimpsed in the MCU. In Guardians of the Galaxy, during the Collector’s history of the Power Stone montage, Eson was the Celestial who used the Power Stone to wipe out a planet. It’s never been revealed how or why Eson lost control of the Power Stone. But in the new ride, he does have an agenda on Earth.

Marvel’s description for the attraction suggests that Eson isn’t necessarily evil. However, his actions may have triggered the reversal of time itself.

“Visitors hoping to explore and learn a little bit about the first-ever Other-World Showcase Pavilion in the area will get more than they expected when Eson, a Celestial that has been watching Earth for eons, makes a startling appearance. The Celestial is looking ‘to right a wrong in a big way,’ and the Guardians of the Galaxy — Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot — step in to help save the day. But, they can’t do it alone and need our help to stop him from completing his grand plan!”

Cosmic Rewind is Disney’s first reverse launch rollercoaster and it is also one of the largest enclosed coasters ever made. Director James Gunn shot new footage of the cast while making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. So there will definitely be a few familiar faces involved when the ride opens on May 27.
