An amazing feat in a recent DC comic proves that Green Arrow is no B-list Batman. Despite headlining his own TV series, the Emerald Archer is unfairly maligned as a carbon copy of the Dark Knight. However, an action sequence in Detective Comics #1109 by Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin shows that Oliver Queen can best Bruce Wayne in several ways.

The previous issue of Detective Comics ended on a cliffhanger, with Oliver Queen being pushed off a building. This would seem an opportune moment for the Dark Knight to swoop in and save his Justice League ally. However, while it is later revealed that Batman was watching, Green Arrow was left to save himself.

Oliver Queen does this by turning his belt into an impromptu whip. This allows him to snare a bit of scaffolding and steer himself to safety. As he does this, Batman analyzes his colleague’s actions. The Dark Knight reflects that, for all they have in common as stubborn billionaire superheroes, he and Green Arrow have wildly different skill sets and training regiments.
Batman recognizes Green Arrow is better in some ways
As Oliver Queen saves himself, Batman reflects on all the areas in which Green Arrow is his better. Firstly, Green Arrow has far better reflexes and reaction time. Secondly, there is his aim and an iron grip developed over years of archery practice. However, the most impressive aspect of Green Arrow’s stunt is his near-superhuman arm strength.

Most beginning archers use bows with a lighter draw weight as they develop the muscles needed to use more powerful bows. However, given his experience and need for more penetrating power, Green Arrow typically uses a longbow with a draw weight of 103 pounds, compared to the 45-65 pounds used by most experienced archers. (The current world record holder for the heaviest draw weight is 200 pounds.)
Batman notes that most people attempting what Green Arrow does here would probably rip their arm out of their socket. However, thanks to his particular skill set and training, Oliver manages to emerge bruised but otherwise okay. Beyond that impressive feat, Batman pays Green Arrow the ultimate complement of explaining that he didn’t intervene because he trusted his teammate to save himself.
