Everything We Know About the 2016 Superhero Movies

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25, 2016

If it wasn’t clear from the trailer itself, director Zack Snyder has said countless times that the primary influence for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” and it shows. Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer originally wrote the screenplay for the movie but primary credit for the script has been attributed to Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio, who has also already written the screenplay for Justice League. Principal photography began in April 2014 and officially wrapped in December.

“Dawn of Justice” will star Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, joined by Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, with Scoot McNairy and Jenna Malone in mystery roles, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film.

The film’s official synopsis reads as follows: Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman in the film, though the actor previously downplayed the size of his role saying: “It’s Batman and Superman. It’s not my movie.”

Another cast member set to appear is Ray Fisher as Victor Stone, aka Cyborg, and he offered a cryptic tease about his turn as the character: “Let me tell you, man, people are in for a hell of a treat.”

Michael Shannon is also set to appear in the film, and who we know from both interviews he’s given and the film’s trailer that he appears as the corpse of General Zod. Shannon also said in an interview he had “flippers for hands” on the set of the film, but later backpedaled on the comments, so the truth on Flippergate remains a mystery.

The film will introduce a brand new Batmobile for the movie which we’ve seen a number of photos of in addition to being featured heavily in the film’s trailer. It boasts a different design from Batmobiles of the past, and appears to be more heavily armed as a machine sits on its front.

Superman’s outfit in the movie will also feature an upgrade from his Man of Steel digs, including sharpening the details of the suit and subliminal Kryptonian writing that will be blink and you’ll miss. Batman’s costume will have more of a comic book influence and features brass knuckles embedded into the gloves. Wonder Woman’s outfit was designed to exemplify her gritty, battle-scarred and immortal qualities, and like Superman’s hidden Kryptonian, her weapons will feature small Greek lettering around them.

Director Zack Snyder also confirmed earlier this year that we’ll be seeing more of Batman than Superman in the film, elaborating: “Only in that because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do—and you just had a whole Superman movie,” Snyder told The Daily Beast. “But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on.”

The opening sequence for the movie will showcase the destruction of Metropolis in Man of Steel from Bruce Wayne’s POV, fueling the conflict between him and Superman.

It has officially received a PG-13 rating by the MPAA for “intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality.”

Composer Hans Zimmer is collaborating with artist Junkie XL for the score of “Dawn of Justice,” with Zimmer set to score the Superman music and Junkie XL scoring the Batman sections.
