Superhero Hype Cosplay: Sally Jupiter from Watchmen
Note From the Editor: To close out February, Superhero Hype’s cosplay correspondent, Ashlynne Dae, is sharing her take on Sally Jupiter, one of the Minutemen from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal comic book series, Watchmen. Within that story, Sally was the original Silk Spectre in the ’40s, and she also had the style to match the pinup models of the era.
Sally Jupiter has always been a retro cosplay goal for me.
I love retro and vintage styles, pinups, and all things old fashioned. And I also love the opportunity to make that converge with my love of cosplay, especially when the character is also a redhead!
I have long wanted to make a Silk Spectre cosplay, but I never thought I could do that hairstyle on myself, because my hair is so insanely curly.
My hair is also difficult to style in retro styles unless it's professionally blown out first.
But of course, we are still in a pandemic and I won't be caught dead in a salon for something as vain as a photo shoot at this moment. However, I think I managed it pretty well on my own, even if it's not perfect!
I’ve always thought Sally’s hair was the most defining part of this cosplay, so it was important for me to get it right.
I was inspired to make this costume after recently having re-watched the Watchmen movie, and the Watchmen TV series on HBO, both of which I loved.
I’m glad to have finally crossed this cosplay off my list.
Hopefully you enjoyed this little blast from the past as much as I did making and shooting it!
