The fate of Venom in Marvel Studios‘ movies is uncertain as of 2026. While a piece of the cinematic Eddie Brock‘s symbiote is at liberty in the MCU, the Lethal Protector is not lined up to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Despite this, a recent power upgrade in the comics could make the symbiotic anti-hero a notable threat in future films.

The new power upgrade was revealed in Venom #253, by Al Ewing and Carlos Gomez. In the current series, the symbiote originally bonded to Peter Parker and Eddie Brock is now connected to Mary Jane Watson. Neither of them is happy with the situation, but it was necessary after both were left too weak to survive on their own.

Mary Jane has successfully turned the symbiote into a more heroic defender. However, the All-New Venom quickly ran afoul of supervillain Madame Masque. This inspired a personal vendetta, with the AIM leader blowing up the new apartment of MJ’s ex-boyfriend Paul after he moved out. However, this disaster gave MJ a chance to show off a new power she and the symbiote had developed together.
What is Venom’s new power upgrade?
Typically, Marvel Comics‘ symbiotes are vulnerable to fire and sonics. Despite this, Venom was able to put out the fire without any apparent discomfort. This was thanks to a new fire extinguishing web formula. While the Lethal Protector can still be injured by fire, the new webbing gives them a way of coping with it.

This new power is a logical extension of Venom’s existing abilities. Venom and their children all developed the ability to generate organic webbing based on Peter Parker’s web fluid formula. Spider-Man frequently altered this formula for fighting different villains, like an insulated webbing for Electro. Given that, and the symbiotes’ ability to generate and process chemicals (as in filtering toxins that might hurt their host) Venom could easily synthesize similar variant web formulas as well.
While this is a useful new power in the comics, it could prove invaluable if Venom returns in the MCU. There are many genius heroes in the MCU who could easily capitalize on the symbiote’s weakness to fire. Introducing the ability to create fire-extinguishing webbing into the movies could even the odds for the Lethal Protector.
Venom #253 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
