Best Comic Adaptations (November 2025)

The past two decades have seen an increase in adaptations of Comic Books into movies and television series. Contrastingly, it has also seen more comics being published that adapt established franchises from other media. While not as well-known, these Comic adaptations often build loyal followings and are considered canon to their source material.

Best Comic Adaptations as of November 2025

It is mind-boggling just how much of the comic book industry is dedicated to adaptations of other works. Some publishers, such as IDW and Dynamite Entertainment, are almost exclusively devoted to licensing other works. Some graphic novels only adapt a single storyline, whereas others develop into franchises in their own right. The following list complies a variety of these adaptations, focusing on quality and accessibility.

Titan Comics’ Blade Runner

Blade Runner 2019

While a box-office bomb on release, Blade Runner has come to be regarded as one of the best science fiction films of all time. Even before it saw a cinematic sequel in 2017, the world of the film was explored in video games and tie-in novels. However, it was the comics published by Titan Comics following the release of Blade Runner 2049 that did the most to expand the setting.

The most extensive of Titans’ Blade Runner comics is the trilogy built around LAPD detective Aahna “Ash” Ashina. As her story opens in Blade Runner 2019, Ash is considered one of the best at what she does. However, Ash has a dark secret; she has a rare spinal condition kept in check by an cybernetic implant that requires regular (and expensive) recharging. Without that, she would be completely paralyzed.

The irony that Ash is more machine than the advanced Replicants she hunts is not lost on her. This leads her to make a bold choice, after she takes charge of a girl named Cleo, who was rescued from her abusive billionaire father by the Replicant modeled on his deceased wife. This kicks off a decades-spanning saga, which shows how Earth develops between the two Blade Runner feature films, in Blade Runner 2029 and Blade Runner 2039.

Titan Comics has published other Blade Runner comic books beyond the Ash trilogy. Blade Runner: Origins explores how the LAPD Blade Runner unit was first established in 2009. The latest series, Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, marks the franchise’s first storyline set outside of America. All these series maintained a consistent core writing team, which included Blade Runner 2049 screenwriter Michael Green.

Conan the Barbarian

Conan

Texan pulp writer Robert E. Howard created many memorable characters in his short life. Yet far and away the most popular of them was Conan the Barbarian. The adventures of Conan continued to be republished long after Howard’s death. However, it was Marvel Comics‘ efforts to adapt Conan for comics that brought the Cimmerian into the mainstream.

Conan’s rise coincided with the first major revision of the Comics Code Authority. The original CCA limited the violence and sexual content of American comics. The revised standards allowed for more brutal adventures, truer to the aesthetic of Howard’s short stories. Consequentially, Conan the Barbarian became one of Marvel’s top titles throughout the 1970s. It also inspired a more mature counterpart with the Savage Sword of Conan magazine. Conan has been a mainstay in comics ever since.

Ironically, the only point in the last five decades Conan didn’t have a monthly comic came during the 1990s, when violent anti-heroes were in vogue. However, the barbarian came back with a vengeance in the 21st century under the management of Dark Horse Comics. Today, the license for Conan is held by Titan Comics, whose current Conan the Barbarian series has solidified the shared universe Howard envisioned for his characters.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 (2019)

MST3K

The cult-classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 may be the oddest property to ever gain a comic book adaptation. While the show has a setting featuring mad scientists, aliens, and time travel, there’s not really a plot as such. Everything in MST3K exists as a conveyance for the show’s comedic conceit of funny people mocking cheesy movies. That does not lend itself well to a comic, which is dependent on action and narrative motion.

Enter the Bubulat-R! The latest invention of Kinga Forrester, it allows people to enter the world of their favorite comics. (Or what public domain comics Kinga could use for free.) She tests this invention on hapless MST3K host Jonah Heston and his robot friends. This traps them within the realities of Johnny Jason: Teen Reporter, Harvey Comics’ Black Cat, and Horrific.

What follows is an artistic marvel, as the MST3K crew are transposed inside the reprinted comics and comment on the absurd action. The riffs are excellent, which is no surprise given that they were written by the show’s creative team. However, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Comic is also an impressive technical achievement. Artists Mike Manley, Jack Pollock and Mimi Simon do a fantastic job of replicating the styles of the original comics. The end result is unlike any comic you have ever read before.

Skybound’s Energon Universe (Transformers/G.I. Joe)

GI Joe

In 2023, Image ComicsSkybound Entertainment imprint secured a licensing partnership with Hasbro. The toy manufacturer had previously tried to establish a shared comic universe for several of their product lines at IDW. However, the effort only lasted two years before coming to a close. Despite this, Skybound felt they could develop a new comic universe with Transformers, G.I. Joe, and their own original property, Void Rivals.

Curated by Robert Kirkman, this shared reality became known as the Energon Universe, named for the substance that sustains Cybertronic life. This universe started from the ground up and did not presume that readers would already be familiar with the Transformers and G.I. Joe characters. Kirkman also took the unusual step of limiting the number of monthly Energon Universe titles to four. This would include limited miniseries devoted to specific characters, like Cobra Commander and Scarlett.

As of November 2025, Skybound has stuck to this plan, with monthly books devoted to Void Rivals, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. However, Kirkman has teased the universe could expand to include other toy lines. This already seems to have happened, with Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem from MASK having made appearances in the series.

Star Wars: Vader Down (2015)

Star Wars Vader Down

Despite having been adapted by many publishers since 1977, Star Wars is almost synonymous with Marvel Comics. Indeed, many comic historians believe it was Marvel‘s spin-off comic that kept the company afloat as the industry suffered in the late 1970s. Marvel reacquired the Star Wars license in 2015 and has published many comics set in the Star Wars Universe since then. However, most fans agree that Vader Down remains the best thing Marvel has done with the license in modern times.

The first crossover between the monthly Star Wars and Darth Vader comics, Vader Down was built around a core image. On one side stands Darth Vader, Sith Lord and the most feared agent of the Emperor. On the other side stands the entire Rebel army and fleet. From their perspective, Vader is surrounded. From his perspective, “all I am surrounded by is fear and dead men.”

The battle which follows rivals the infamous Vader fight in Star Wars: Rogue One in intensity. However, the seven-part story is not merely focused on Vader creatively killing an army. The crossover also showed the reactions of the other main cast from both books. While both series are quality comic books, most agree they’ve yet to top Vader Down in sheer audacity.

How we determined the Best Comic Adaptations

For the most part, picking single storylines out was all but impossible. Given that, this list primarily leaned on whole franchises with easily understood continuity. Preference was also given to those series that are still in print, which either established a new setting or did a fantastic job of capturing the essence of the source material.
